Softball Umpire Uniform & Equipment

All umpires working high school and junior high school games need to be dressed professionally and wear the proper uniform.  Uniform is one of the few areas in officiating where you have control.   Please make an effort to dress and look professionally.  Whenever possible, the umpires' uniforms should match (both the same USA style and color of pants and shirt). 

The USA Softball uniform is required. The USA uniform website where you can buy USA licensed equipment is USA Softball Gear (formerly Official Gear).

The uniform & equipment are as follows:

•  Navy blue hat w/USA embroidered on the cap. Long bill for the bases and short bill for the plate (yes, you should wear a hat on the plate).  The hat should be relatively new and not significantly faded.

•  Navy blue or light blue shirt Pro Style polo shirt w/USA letters. Either dark or light blue are acceptable. You may also wear long sleeve shirts with USA letters.

•  Slacks should be navy blue or gray.  Heather gray and Dark Charcoal gray are both acceptable for 2026.  Dark Charcoal gray will be the ONLY acceptable pants color for 2027. 

•  NO SHORTS IN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL!

•  Either gray or navy pants are acceptable, but the board prefers gray pants that should be clean and pressed. All game umpires should agree on shirt and pants before the game. 

•  Black belt  (additionally, a flex belt can be a great idea. It is worn inside the pants to keep the shirt tucked in)

•  Navy blue jacket w/USA embroidered on the jacket (if worn) 

•  Black shoes - Should be shined and in good condition.

•  Black or navy socks 

•  Ball bag or 2  (Navy blue or gray - must have USA on them)

•  Black mask with throat protector 

  •  Your throat protector does NOT need to be a separate item.

•  Indicator 

•  Plate brush that fits in your back pocket or your ball bag - Should be used when umpiring the plate or the bases.

•  T-shirt (if worn) Should be white under the powder blue shirt and navy blue under the navy blue shirt. It should be a plain shirt, not a T-shirt with a logo on it.

•  Chest protector & Shin guards (both recommended, not required).
