Federation Softball Umpires

We are the board that provides softball umpires for high schools and middle schools in Southern & Western Maine.

From Kittery to Freeport to Bridgton to Fryeburg.

New umpires must attend at least 3 of the first 5 clinics. All umpires must attend the March 30 mandatory meeting.

Steps to be eligible for the 2025 season for returning members:

Pay your WMBFSU dues of $25.00 here
Confirm your Maine Department of Education background check is still valid (necessary every 5 years).
- To check your status go to https://www.maine.gov/doe/cert/status
- Click 'I DO NOT have a MEIS account'
- Enter your last name and last 4 of your SSN and hit submit.
- Once complete, email a screenshot to wmbfsu.st@gmail.com.
Register online with USA Softball: - $95. You must complete the USA Softball background check in addition to the Maine DoE background and fingerprinting. You do NOT need to pass the USA Softball test unless you are interested in also working USA Softball tournaments.
Attend the WMBFSU Mandatory Clinic on March 30, 2025
Take and pass an on-line test of National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) softball rules via DragonFly (Passing percentage 85%)
- NFHS Rules Test Part 1 open February 24, 2025 - March 31, 2025
- NFHS Rules Test Part 2 open April 1, 2025 - April 30, 2025

NFHS Updates

To be tournament eligible to work post-season high school softball games, umpires must meet the following criteria;

• Must take the on-line NFHS exam and receive a score of 85 or higher.

Part 1 is open from - TBD

Part 2 is open from - TBD

To be tournament eligible, it does not matter which version you take

• Must have attended the NFHS rules interpretation session.

• Must have attended three person mechanics presentation.

• Must have umpired at least;

25 high school varsity games in his/her career at a given position (base vs. plate)
In the current year must have umpired at least 10 high school varsity games.
