Western Maine Board of Federation Softball Umpires

Softball Umpire Uniform & Equipment

All umpires working high school and junior high school games need to be dressed professionally and wearing the proper uniform.  Concerns have been expressed by the MPA softball committee that umpires are not dressed alike and are not dressed professionally.  Uniform is one of the few areas in officiating there that you have control over.   Please make an effort to dress and look professional.  Note: ASA has been rebranded as USA. The new USA uniform will be required for the 2020 season. Until then you may wear USA or ASA uniforms and equipment. Since the shirts are significantly different, whenever possible, the umpires should match (both the same color and either ASA or USA style).

The uniform & equipment is as follows:

        • Navy blue hat ($14 to $17) w/ASA or USA embroidered on the cap

Long bill for the bases and short bill for the plate (yes, you should wear a hat on the plate).  The hat should be relatively new and not significantly faded.

        • Navy blue or light blue shirt Pro Style polo shirt ($32) w/ASA or USA letters (#140 or #130). Either dark or light blue are acceptable, but the board prefers the dark blue.

You may also wear long sleeve shirts ($32) w/ASA or USA letters (#160 or #170).

        • Navy blue or heather gray ($45-$47). NO SHORTS IN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL!

Either gray or navy are acceptable, but the board prefers gray pants

Clean and pressed.  Dickies should be avoided as they fade.

        • Black belt ($12-$13)

Also, a flex belt ($15) is a great idea, keeps the shirt tucked in

        • Navy blue jacket w/ASA or USA embroidered on the jacket (if worn) ($57, for XXL & XXXL $59)

        • Black shoes ($29-$109)

Should be shined and in good condition.

        • Black or navy socks ($4)

        • Ball bag ($9-$11)  (Navy blue when wearing blue pants, gray when wearing gray pants - must have ASA on them)

Worn only when doing the plate.

        • Black mask ($24-$179) with throat protector ($6)

Unlike the players, your throat protector does NOT need to be a separate item.

        • Indicator ($3.50-$4)

        • Plate brush that fits in your back pocket or your ball bag ($4-$7)

Should be used when umpiring the plate or the bases.

        • T-shirt (if worn)

Should be white under the powder blue shirt and navy blue under the navy blue shirt. It should be a plain shirt, not a T-shirt with a logo on it.

        • Chest protector ($29-$99) & Shin guards ($9-$59) (both recommended, not required).
